How to Deal with ADHD Using Tapping
I was around 35 years when I got my ADHD diagnosis, so I completely understand what it's like to wonder why you've always felt different without having the answers.
As women with ADHD, many of us were only diagnosed later in life, so we've become experts at juggling life's demands while feeling guilty or ashamed for not behaving, managing or coping “like we should”. We've hidden our challenges for so long that accepting help can be a struggle, even when it's what we need most.
We often find ourselves overwhelmed, taking on too much, wrestling with boundaries, and saying yes far more often than we say no. The pursuit of being enough, blinds us to the immense pressure we place on ourselves to be everything for everyone.
Just like you, I've felt overwhelmed, frazzled, guilty, stressed, exhausted, fearful, negative, sleep-deprived, anxious, unbalanced, worthless and plagued by self-doubt.
There's no shame in experiencing these feelings, but over time, I've developed tools for well-being that have helped shift the way I navigate through them—without judgment and shame. This transformation has allowed me to live a more fulfilling and joyful life. And you can too.
Just like an onion has many layers, we've accumulated years of old conditioning that need gentle peeling away to rediscover and remember who we truly are and what we're here to be. There are no limits to how we can feel once we re-connect with our inner voice and adjust our mindset - this is where the real magic happens, and I'm here to guide you on that journey.
I've been using Tapping in my daily life for years to relax, remove limiting beliefs, ease stress and pain and help with my ADHD, and guess what? It's been working wonders for my kids too! (I live in a rainbow family of 4 people and 3 furrys, I love them, but it fore sure comes with it’s challenges).
First things first, let's talk about ADHD. It's essential to understand that it's not some sort of character flaw but a neurobiological condition that affects attention and impulse control. I know you'd never think otherwise, but there are still misconceptions out there.
ADHD can manifest in so many various ways, like forgetfulness, inattention, overwhelm, low motivation, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. People with ADHD often have unique strengths, like creativity, hyperfocus, periods with loads of energy, intuition and resilience.
And what’s Tapping? Tapping has been a game-changer for me and my family. Essentially, it combines acupressure and cognitive behavioral therapy. You tap on specific parts of your body while focusing on an issue or problem.
I have developed my own Best You method, where we tap into our best selves. It's all about clearing negativity, making you feel lighter, freer, and more empowered.
Tapping combines principles from acupressure (body) and psychology (mind) to reduce stress and clear emotional obstacles. By tapping on specific acupressure points while focusing on an issue, concern, or emotionally charged topic, you can calm yourself down and make space for creative problem-solving. And the best part? It's simple enough for you to do on your own!
Clinical trials have shown that Tapping actively lowers the cortisol in our bodies, calming our minds and stress response too. Tapping uses the body’s energy meridian points, which are stimulated by tapping on them with your fingertips, which sends signals to the amygdala (the ‘fight or flight’ part of the brain) to calm down and relax. By talking through our thoughts at the same time, we’re able to process, heal and release.
Now, you might be wondering why Tapping is such a great tool for those of us with ADHD.
It provides quick and lasting results, something our ADHD brains thrive on. Just a few rounds of tapping can get you unstuck or ease distress from emotional dysregulation, overthinking, or anxiety.
It's excellent for emotional regulation, something many of us with ADHD struggle with. Stress, anxiety, and overwhelm can be a common theme in our lives, and tapping can help manage these emotions effectively.
Tapping can also address those pesky limiting beliefs we sometimes carry around. You know, the ones that make us doubt ourselves or feel not good enough? Tapping can expose and resolve these thoughts.
And it doesn't stop there! Conditions often associated with ADHD, like anxiety, shame, depression, OCD, anger management difficulties, and even physical conditions like Fibromyalgia, have also been shown to benefit from Tapping.
So Tapping can help you with:
Stress Reduction: Tapping helps reduce stress and anxiety, making it easier to stay calm and focused.
Enhanced Focus: By tapping on certain points, it improves the flow of energy in the body, which is excellent for boosting concentration.
Managing Restlessness and Impulsivity: It's great for reducing restlessness and impulsive behavior, two common ADHD symptoms.
Identifying and Releasing Limiting Beliefs: It shifts your mindset from "I can't focus" to "I have the ability to focus with the right strategies." It's all about empowerment!
Self-Awareness and Emotional Regulation: Tapping helps you understand your strengths and challenges, giving you the tools to manage your emotions and behaviors effectively.
I use Tapping everyday, during daily walks, in the car, in bed, at work.. it’s so integrated into my daily routine that I often do it automaticly, and it's made a significant difference in my life.
I've tapped away so many different kinds of limiting beliefs, reduced anxiety, learned to love myself more, tapped into my power and creativity, managed stress better, released all kinds of pain and harnessed my energy effectively. The best part? I introduced it to my kids, and they've use it too to feel better and release stress and anxiety.
If any of these challenges sound familiar to you, then Tapping could be a game-changer in your life too. I use it within my coaching to help clients accomplish more and feel better about themselves. But you don't necessarily need a coaching relationship for this – we can also work on one specific problem outside of coaching.
Here's how it works if we work together:
We meet online via video or voice chat. Your comfort and privacy are my priority.
I'll listen to your story, helping you pinpoint the obstacles and understand the distress the problem is causing you.
Then, the tapping begins. I'll guide you to overcome your problem by using setup statements like, "Even though I feel overwhelmed with all I have to do today, I deeply and completely, love, accept and forgive myself and how I feel." We start with three of these statements while tapping on a meridian point on the side of your hand. Don't worry; we'll do it together, and you just need to copy me.
Next, we move on to tapping on other acupressure points while repeating your reminder statement. This is where the real magic happens as we address the issue.
During the process, thoughts, memories, sensations, or feelings may pop up. We tap on these as they come, and they act like stepping stones guiding us out of emotional distress and into a more positive state.
Tapping can provide immense relief and help you feel calmer and more at peace. It's like a reset, clearing the path so that you can continue smoothly on your journey.
